Sponsor a Deaf Child

A gift of $40 a month can help provide food, medical care, education, and vocational trade skill training for Liberian deaf children in Monrovia, Liberia. In many countries deaf children are considered a curse from God and they are discarded as such at a young age. The majority of the children living at the Deaf Mission, in Liberia, have no family to care for them. Either their parents were killed in the civil wars or their family members cannot or do not want to care for them. There are about 40 children living at the boarding school/home there and they range in age from 5 – early 20’s.

Your sponsorship will not only impact your sponsor child’s physical needs, but it will also impact their emotional and spiritual needs. Having someone choose them personally to sponsor is inspiring. While your monthly sponsorship will benefit all those at the Deaf Mission, your one-on-one connection with the deaf child you sponsor (heart adoption) will be life-changing. You may very well be the only person in your child's life who continually expresses love and concern for him or her as a person who is truly valued by God.

Prayer is vital for the deaf child that you “Heart Adopt”. Your prayers can be life-changing. You are given the opportunity to correspond with your child 2-3 times each year. Let them know you are praying for them. You will receive 1-2 letters from your child each year, as well. Since the mail delivery system in Liberia is still unreliable, all of your correspondence is facilitated through CAS (Christian Adoption Services) in Matthews, NC. Your letters are hand carried to your child by those traveling to and from Liberia from the US. Each year you will also receive an updated photo of your child.

In You, the fatherless finds compassion. Hosea 14:3

Signs for Hope partners with CAS and ACFI (African Christians Fellowship International) to help care for these precious children so close to the heart of God. ACFI is the indigenous Christian Church in Liberia who has been caring for these deaf children since its director Ed Kofi’s own son lost his hearing many years ago –1997—after battling meningitis. CAS continues their support of these needy children, through ACFI, even though Liberia has a moratorium on adoption.

"And the King will say, 'I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!” Matthew 25:40

Liberia, West Africa remains in the top 10 (most often in the top 5) poorest countries in the world. In comparison, Haiti is around 20th following the earthquake of 2010. 83.9% of Liberians are living in abject poverty. 83.7% of Liberians are living on as little as $1.25 or less a day, and 83.9% are deprived of cooking fuel (wood or coal). Liberia is a country still recovering from two decades of civil wars. Most Liberians are still living in survival-mode. Their biggest concern when the sun rises each morning; what will they be able to find to eat that day and how will they be able to cook it? The two previous civil wars left this nation ineconomic ruin with almost no infrastructure; no roads, no electricity, no sewage or garbage disposal and very little clean water. Despite nearly seven years of peace, Liberia is still one of the poorest countries in the world with the number of orphaned and indigent children approaching 200,000.

By donating $40 a month through the Christian Adoption Services' African Child Sponsorship program, you can help provide scholarships for children who have been orphaned or whose families no longer care for them. Your support helps pay for food, basic medical care, teacher and caretaker stipends, school supplies, and maintenance of the school and home facilities for all the children. Would you be willing to commit to showing the love of Christ in a tangible way by monthly sponsoring—Heart Adopting—one or more of these deaf children in Liberia?
